As a parent I have become more concerned about the world in which we live. The lifestyle adjustments we make as a family to minimise our impact on the environment may not be huge in themselves but if we all made similar changes the collective effects would be.
We began, when our son was born by using washable nappies, these have changed greatly over the years and thankfully there are no safety pins involved.
It is estimated that disposable nappies contribute 2% of the content of the domestic waste stream, this is the amount of waste created by a city the size of Birmingham.
The use of washable nappies inevitably led to me looking at the makeup of toiletries we use on our children and the synthetic chemicals that seem to bombard us from every direction. It is alleged that the increase in allergies and cancers in the developed world is linked to this exposure. We are unable to remove all of these chemicals from our daily life but we can reduce it. As more people choose to eat an organic diet to avoid chemicals in their bodies, it seems appropriate that they would choose to do the same with products that they use on their bodies.
The toiletries that we offer are mostly organic and do not contain any artificial fragrances, SLS/SLES's or parabens. The scents from these products are all from natural ingredients, giving you the benefit of the plants properties and not just the smell. Your body can absorb up to 60% of the chemicals which come into contact with your skin. This is beneficial if you are using aloe vera to soothe and moisturise, but not if you are exposing your skin to a cocktail of synthetic ingredients.
Another way we can avoid unnecessary exposure to chemicals is by changing our cleaning habits. Avoid any products containing phosphates, enzymes, chlorine bleach, formaldehyde, 'parfum' and parabens, or any product which does not display its ingredients or give you an easy way to find out what they are. Bio D products do not contain any of these, neither do they contain antibacterial agents.
We are all aware of excess packaging and the use of one trip shopping bags, I always carry Onya bags when I go out in case I need to make any spontaneous purchases. Our current landfill tonnage is not sustainable and we are all going to be paying more in the future for disposing of our waste.
